Provoked Violence, Unchecked for Hours The New York Times used videos filmed by journalists, witnesses and protesters to analyze hours of clashes — and a delayed police response — at a pro-Palestinian encampment on Tuesday. On Tuesday night, violence erupted at an encampment that pro-Palestinian protesters had set up on April 25. The videos showed counterprotesters attacking students in the pro-Palestinian encampment for several hours, including beating them with sticks, using chemical sprays and launching fireworks as weapons. The melee began when a group of counterprotesters started tearing away metal barriers that had been in place to cordon off pro-Palestinian protesters. 12:26 a.m.Sean Beckner-Carmitchel via ReutersAt times, counterprotesters swarmed individuals — sometimes a group descended on a single person.

Executives looking to boost their own profiles have for years paid freelancers to ghostwrite their LinkedIn posts. Now big PR firms are getting into the game, and LinkedIn profile management is going mainstream. Business Insider spoke to 14 PR firms that said more companies are asking for LinkedIn writing and strategy services for their leaders. Zappa said he does not offer specific rates for LinkedIn posts and instead includes LinkedIn in broader content contracts. However, he estimated that PR firms solely focused on LinkedIn ghostwriting could charge companies $5,000 a month for three to five LinkedIn posts.

Retired Australian Army Maj. Gen. Mick Ryan advocates for a change in Ukraine's war strategy. Ryan suggests Ukraine needs to push its narrative in Western media to counter Russia's influence. The Russian military has changed its warfighting capabilities, and the defense industry has been kicked into gear. Ukraine, he argued, must push its narrative to get through to Western media and dispute Russia's declarations of expected victory. Ryan said NATO and other partner nations should consider switching their perception of providing support from "defend Ukraine" to "defeat Russia in Ukraine."

A report by strategy consultant firm Tyton Partners, sponsored by plagiarism detection platform Turnitin, found half of college students used AI tools in Fall 2023. The practice of using AI for writing feedback or grading assignments also raises ethical considerations. But teachers should then grade students’ work themselves when looking for novelty, creativity and depth of insight. “Using feedback that is not truly from me seems like it is shortchanging that relationship a little,” she said. She also sees uploading a student’s work to ChatGPT as a “huge ethical consideration” and potentially a breach of their intellectual property.

Before the war, having a young woman in charge of an all-male Ukrainian military unit might have given the troops pause. She works in a repair department of the Ukrainian Railways in the Poltava region. With women making up 40% of Ukrainian Railways’ employees, she is likely not the only one. WASHINGTON (AP) — John Kirby, President Joe Biden's national security spokesman, is getting an expanded role at the White House, according to a U.S. official. Kirby will have a new title, White House national security communications adviser, and will be named an assistant to the president, the official said Sunday. Kirby came to the White House in 2022 as the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, not long after Karine Jean-Pierre was named White House press secretary, after the departure of former press secretary Jen Psaki. He will run a separate team from the national security press team that will coordinate information across agencies, the official said. Under Biden, Kirby has been a regular fixture in the White House press briefing room.

On Wednesday the White House said it believes an umbrella group of militants called Islamic Resistance in Iraq was behind the drone attack in Jordan. He stopped short of assigning exact blame on Kata’ib Hezbollah, the most powerful Iran-backed militia in Iraq, saying it was not the only group responsible for previous attacks on US bases. On Friday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said his country will not initiate a war but will “respond strongly” to bullies. In a sign of a possible effort to quell the tensions, Kataib Hezbollah, announced on Tuesday the suspension of its military operations against US forces in the region. “We are announcing the suspension of military and security operations against the occupation forces (US troops) - in order to prevent embarrassment to the Iraqi government,” Kataib Hezbollah said in a statement.

The US has in recent months carried out several strikes targeting Iranian proxies’ weapons depots in Iraq and Syria. Chinese-founded online retail giant Shein is not positioning itself as an Amazon "clone," the company told CNBC, as it prepares for a U.S. public listing later this year. But that expansion will vary from market to market, and skew heavily toward Generation Z — born between the late 1990s and early 2000s — and younger Millennial consumers, who were born between the early 1980s and late 1990s. "I don't see us an an Amazon clone per se," Pernot-Day said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "So, product categories vary across these markets. But the core point is that being receptive and responsive to Generation Z, younger Millennial shoppers, is something that leads to growth," he added.

CNN —The US and UK carried out additional strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen on Monday, marking the eighth round of attacks by the US military on the rebels’ infrastructure in just over 10 days, two defense officials told CNN. The US has now struck Houthi targets in Yemen eight times since January 11, the majority of which the US military has carried out unilaterally. The first wave of strikes, in which the US and UK hit approximately 30 sites across Houthi-controlled Yemen, marked the beginning of Operation Poseidon Archer, one official said. The US also carried out all of its strikes on Houthi targets last week unilaterally, in contrast to the coalition of countries that supported the first round of joint US and UK strikes on the Houthis on January 11. “We’re not looking for a conflict with the Houthis, we’re not looking for a conflict in the region,” he added.

New York CNN —US-led airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen rattled energy markets on Friday, sending oil prices sharply higher. Oil prices rose sharply after US-led strikes on multiple Houthi targets in Yemen in response to repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Another concern is that oil facilities in Saudi Arabia could get hit by a retaliatory strike from the Houthis. In 2019, roughly 5% of world oil supply was briefly knocked offline in a large-scale drone attack on Saudi oil facilities. Despite Friday’s gains, oil prices remain lower than where they were before the October 7 attacks by Hamas against Israel due to concerns about oversupply.

Known for his hard-line stances against abortion and LGBTQ+ priorities, DeSantis could get a boost from an Iowa Republican electorate that is unusually socially conservative. But even those plum endorsements aren't moving Iowa Republicans from the Trump camp. "Donald Trump is a lap ahead of the field," says former Iowa Republican Party co-chairman David Oman, a former chief of staff to two GOP Iowa governors and a prominent Haley supporter. The morning after an anticipated Trump win in the Iowa caucuses, a trial starts in New York to determine a second set of damages in a defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. And while the GOP winner is all but assured in Iowa, the state has still played a key role in the primary process.

In this year's gleaming host city of Dubai, billboards advertise the benefits of wind energy, climate ambition and Exxon Mobil's (XOM.N) carbon capture projects. This is seen by some as a sign of success and by others as a dangerous distraction from the business of combating climate change as over nearly three decades global oil demand, carbon emissions and temperatures have marched steadily upward.
